Low-pressure area in Bay of Bengal likely to intensify into depression by Oct 25
IN · Published Oct 23, 2026
• A low-pressure area is developing over the southeast and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal, with high probability of intensifying into a depression by 25 October
• According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is expected to move west-northwestwards and may further intensify over the subsequent three days. This development could signal the onset of a fresh cyclonic threat in the region. Squally weather conditions with wind speeds of 35-45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph, are forecast over the eastcentral and southeast Bay of Bengal starting 23 October evening. These wind speeds are expected to increase progressively, reaching 70 kmph gusts by Sunday evening and potentially exceeding 90 kmph by Monday. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha due to the system's influence.

Impact & Risks

The intensifying weather system poses risks of heavy rainfall and strong winds in coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Maritime activities in the Bay of Bengal are likely to be disrupted due to squally weather and increasing wind speeds, which could reach gale-force levels exceeding 90 kmph by early next week. Communities in the affected regions should prepare for potential flooding and infrastructure damage, especially if the system develops into a cyclone. However, the IMD has not yet confirmed the likelihood of cyclone formation or its potential landfall location.
