A tunnel under construction at the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti hydroelectric project in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, collapsed late Thursday night, resulting in the deaths of at least seven workers.
According to officials, a sudden rush of water and debris entered the tunnel, trapping 22 workers.

Impact & Risks

The collapse highlights the risks associated with infrastructure projects in the fragile Himalayan region, where seismic activity and unpredictable underground conditions pose significant challenges. The incident has left families of the deceased and missing workers in distress, while raising concerns about safety standards in construction projects. Such accidents could deter future investments in hydropower projects in the region.
