Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has called for enhanced coordination among disaster management agencies and greater community involvement in disaster response.
Speaking at a workshop in Chandigarh on 18 September 2026, he emphasised the need for proactive measures, such as identifying and addressing unsafe buildings before heavy rains.

Impact & Risks

The Governor raised concerns about the risks posed by unregulated construction in flood-prone areas, citing recent collapses of large structures in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. He warned that such practices exacerbate property damage and loss of life during natural disasters. The lack of pre-emptive warnings and inadequate community training were identified as critical gaps in the current disaster management framework.
