The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana, warning of widespread heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls with wind speeds of 70-80 km/h, gusting up to 90 km/h, on Friday.
Hailstorms are also expected at isolated locations.
This comes after a heatwave gripped the region earlier in the week, with temperatures reaching as high as 45.4°C (113.7°F) in some areas.

Why It's Important?

The severe weather is expected to disrupt daily life across the region. Potential impacts include falling tree branches, flying debris, lightning strikes, and damage to vehicles, windows, and structures such as asbestos sheds. Power and water supply disruptions are also likely, along with slippery roads and poor visibility, which could lead to traffic issues. Hailstorms may cause injuries to people and livestock and damage standing crops. Residents are advised to take precautions to minimize risks during the storm.
