• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather bulletin forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across southern India due to a well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Arabian Sea. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe are expected to experience intense spells of rain until October
• A low-pressure area is also likely to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Tamil Nadu coast within 24 hours, further contributing to rainfall in the region. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana are also expected to receive heavy rainfall during this period.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall could lead to waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and potential flooding in low-lying areas. Schools in Chennai and neighbouring districts have been closed on October 21 due to overnight rain. Gusty winds of 30-40 km/h, with gusts up to 50 km/h, are expected in Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep, posing risks to fishermen and coastal communities. Agricultural activities may also be affected in the impacted regions.
