• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal due to a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal.
• Schools in Chennai and four neighbouring districts, including Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Ranipet, have been closed on October 21 following heavy overnight rainfall.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall poses risks of localised flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions to road traffic, particularly in low-lying areas and regions with poor drainage systems. Residents in affected districts are advised to remain cautious near water bodies and avoid crossing flooded roads. Motorists should anticipate delays and follow local authorities' instructions to ensure safety. The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds accompanying the rainfall, which could further exacerbate the situation.
