Heavy to Very Heavy Rain Forecast in Tamil Nadu; Chennai on Alert
IN · Published Oct 20, 2026
• The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued a forecast for heavy to very heavy rainfall in seven districts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, 20 October
• Thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph are also expected. The affected districts include Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, and Villupuram, along with Puducherry and Karaikal. Chennai and its suburbs are likely to experience moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms in some areas. The weather activity is attributed to an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal, extending up to 5.8 km above sea level, and a trough extending from this system to the northwest Bay of Bengal.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall poses risks of waterlogging, localised flooding, and disruption to daily activities in the affected districts, including Chennai. Strong winds may lead to damage to weak structures and trees. Residents in low-lying areas and near water bodies are particularly vulnerable. The thunderstorms and lightning also increase the risk of electrical hazards and injuries.
