• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that a depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into Cyclonic Storm 'Murasu'.
• The storm is currently centred over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, approximately 560 km east-southeast of Chennai, 660 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam, and 630 km east-southeast of Nellore.

Impact & Risks

The cyclonic storm poses a significant risk to coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. High wind speeds and heavy rainfall are expected to cause damage to infrastructure, including roads, houses, and power lines. Coastal crops, plantations, and orchards are also at risk, with potential damage to banana, papaya, and drumstick trees. The storm may lead to flooding in low-lying areas and disrupt transportation and communication networks. Marine activities are likely to be severely affected, with very high sea waves of 9-14 metres and reduced visibility.
