Eight Tornadoes Confirmed in Chicago-Area Derecho

The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed two additional tornadoes from the severe weather outbreak on August 11, bringing the total to eight.
The derecho swept through the Chicago area last Tuesday morning, producing straight-line winds exceeding 100 mph (161 km/h) and multiple tornadoes.

Impact & Risks

The derecho caused widespread damage, knocking out power for hundreds of thousands of residents and leaving communities in need of federal assistance for cleanup efforts. Tornadoes ranging from EF-0 to EF-2 caused structural damage, uprooted trees, and disrupted transportation. Areas such as Morris, Monee, and Tinley Park experienced significant impacts, with some tornadoes traveling over 25 miles. Residents in affected regions face ongoing risks from debris and damaged infrastructure.
