Northeast Ohio Faces School Closures Amid Dangerous Heat
• Northeast Ohio is experiencing a significant heatwave, with heat index values forecasted to approach 100°F (37.8°C) on Wednesday, 2 September
• In response, several schools across the region, including those in North Olmsted, Elyria, Lorain, Parma, and Cleveland, have announced closures. A heat advisory has been issued for the entire region, with the National Weather Service expanding its coverage eastward. Wednesday is expected to be the hottest day, with widespread highs in the 90s°F (32-37°C) and high humidity making it feel even hotter. Thunderstorms with damaging winds and hail are also possible before daybreak, followed by additional storms later in the evening.
Impact & Risks
The extreme heat poses health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and those without access to air conditioning. Schools without cooling systems, such as Independence Primary and Middle Schools, have opted to close to ensure the safety of students and staff. High humidity levels will exacerbate the heat, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. Overnight temperatures in the low to mid-70s°F (21-24°C) will provide little relief, and thunderstorms could bring damaging winds and hail, adding to the potential hazards.
