• Tamil Nadu's Housing and Urban Development Minister, B. Rajkumar, conducted a review of flood mitigation efforts and monsoon preparedness in Cuddalore district on 20 October
• A total of 239 locations have been identified as vulnerable to flooding, with 22 classified as very highly vulnerable. The Minister inspected ongoing works to strengthen the banks of the Thenpennai river, which are being carried out at a cost of ₹57 crore. Additionally, cyclone shelters, multipurpose shelters, and temporary shelters have been readied to accommodate over 1.79 lakh people. Rescue equipment, including earthmovers, rubber boats, and generators, has been prepared, and government hospitals have been instructed to stock medicines and ensure uninterrupted power supply.

Impact & Risks

The identified vulnerable locations in Cuddalore district pose a significant risk to residents during the Northeast monsoon season. Flood-prone areas such as Manjakuppam, Om Sakthi Nagar, and Poonthendral Nagar are being prioritised for mitigation efforts. The classification of 22 locations as very highly vulnerable highlights the potential for severe flooding. Preparedness measures aim to minimise risks, but residents in these areas may face disruptions, including evacuation and loss of access to essential services.
