Dartmouth Encourages Pumpkin Composting After Halloween

• The Town of Dartmouth, Massachusetts, is offering residents multiple eco-friendly options to dispose of unpainted pumpkins and cornstalks after Halloween. These include curbside yard waste collection, drop-off at the Water Pollution Control Facility, and backyard composting. Curbside collection is available for SMART (Save Money and Reduce Trash) Program customers on scheduled yard waste days, with remaining 2026 dates set for October 30, November 6, November 20, and December
• Residents can also drop off materials at the Water Pollution Control Facility at 759 Russells Mills Road during designated hours. Additionally, backyard compost bins are available for purchase at the Crapo Hill Landfill. All decorations and non-compostable materials must be removed before disposal.

Impact & Risks

This initiative aims to reduce landfill waste and promote sustainable practices by encouraging residents to compost organic materials. Affected parties include Dartmouth residents, particularly those participating in the SMART Program. Improper disposal of pumpkins and cornstalks, such as leaving them at the curb without proper packaging, could result in non-collection. Painted or decorated pumpkins must be disposed of as regular trash, as they are not suitable for composting.
