Delhi braces for worsening air pollution as winter approaches
IN · Published Sep 21, 2026
Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are preparing for the annual winter smog season, which typically worsens after Diwali.
The Commission for Air Quality Management has issued an advisory instructing Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh to avoid scheduling physical sporting activities in schools during November and December due to deteriorating air quality.

Impact & Risks

The worsening air pollution poses significant health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Sporting activities and outdoor events are being curtailed, affecting students and athletes. Families with resources are opting to leave the city temporarily, while those without such options are forced to endure the hazardous conditions. Urban villages in Delhi, which traditionally fostered outdoor sports and community activities, are losing safe spaces due to pollution and construction, impacting local lifestyles and opportunities for physical activity.
