Monsoon Withdraws from Delhi with 16% Surplus Rainfall
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially declared the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Delhi on 23 September 2026, two days earlier than the normal date of 25 September. This marks the earliest withdrawal since 2002, though earlier withdrawals have been recorded historically, such as on 3 September
• Delhi received 728.6 mm of rainfall at Safdarjung since 1 June, which is 16% above the normal of 629.7 mm. Despite this surplus, the IMD categorises the overall seasonal rainfall as 'normal'. The withdrawal signifies a transition to drier atmospheric conditions, with rainfall activity expected to ease significantly.

The withdrawal of the monsoon signals the end of the rainy season in Delhi, reducing the likelihood of significant rainfall in the coming weeks. While this transition may bring relief from waterlogging and flooding risks, it also marks the onset of drier weather, which could lead to increased dust and air quality concerns in the capital. Isolated rain may still occur due to local weather systems, but no significant rainfall warnings have been issued for Delhi or Haryana for the week of 23-29 September.
