Several regions in northern and central India, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Punjab, are experiencing an intense heatwave with temperatures significantly exceeding seasonal averages.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi recorded temperatures between 44°C and 45°C (111°F to 113°F), with isolated areas reaching 46°C (115°F).
Uttar Pradesh's Banda district emerged as one of the hottest locations, hitting 48.2°C (118.8°F).

Why It's Important?

The ongoing heatwave poses significant risks to public health, agriculture, and infrastructure. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and outdoor workers, are at heightened risk of heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and dehydration. The extreme temperatures have also impacted tourism and horticulture, with reports of premature drying of flowers in Jammu and Kashmir. In urban areas like Delhi, the heat has exacerbated air pollution, further endangering respiratory health. The IMD has warned residents in affected regions to take precautions, as the heatwave is expected to persist for the next few days.
