• The Supreme Court has permitted the use of certified green crackers in Delhi-NCR for two days during Diwali
• Green crackers, developed by CSIR-NEERI, are designed to emit fewer pollutants compared to conventional fireworks. They incorporate modified chemical compositions and additives to suppress particulate emissions and reduce noise levels. The court has prohibited firecracker use within 300 metres of hospitals, nursing homes, educational institutions, and other designated silence zones. Only manufacturers with valid certification are allowed to produce green crackers, ensuring compliance with emission-reduction criteria.

Impact & Risks

The use of green crackers aims to mitigate air pollution during Diwali celebrations in Delhi-NCR, where air quality typically deteriorates due to stubble burning, vehicular emissions, and unfavourable weather conditions. However, green crackers still release particulate matter and smoke, which can exacerbate respiratory issues for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with asthma or COPD. Strict enforcement of certification rules and limited use are crucial to minimising health risks and environmental impact.
