Delhi Approves 4.7-km Flood Protection Wall Along Yamuna River

• The Delhi government has approved a series of projects worth Rs 622 crore to enhance flood management and drainage infrastructure in the city.
• A key component is the construction of a 4.7-km reinforced cement concrete (RCC) flood protection wall along a vulnerable stretch of the Yamuna River, from Magazine Road drain to the Old Railway Bridge.

Impact & Risks

The RCC wall is expected to safeguard low-lying areas near the Yamuna River, such as Magazine Road, from flooding during high water levels. However, experts warn that while the wall may protect specific areas, it could push floodwaters to other vulnerable locations like Usmanpur. The biomining projects aim to reduce pollution caused by silt dumping into the Yamuna, which carries approximately 8,000 tonnes of silt daily. Despite these measures, the projects are seen as temporary solutions, with experts advocating for comprehensive floodplain zoning and larger investments for long-term flood management.
