Delhi's air quality worsens at night, PM2.5 levels spike
IN · Published Oct 22, 2026
• Delhi's air quality has deteriorated significantly, with PM2.5 levels reaching 'Very Poor' at night.
• On October 21 at 1 am, 45 out of 53 air monitors in the city recorded air quality in the 'Poor' or worse category, with an average PM2.5 concentration of 191.2 micrograms per cubic metre.

Impact & Risks

The worsening air quality poses health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Prolonged exposure to high PM2.5 levels can lead to respiratory and cardiovascular issues. Night-time pollution is especially concerning as it coincides with weaker winds, trapping pollutants closer to the ground. The situation is expected to worsen as crop burning intensifies in neighbouring states, adding to Delhi's pollution mix.
