15% Rainfall Deficit Raises Concerns for Indian Farmers
IN · Published Oct 7, 2026
• India is experiencing a 15% national rainfall deficit as the southwest monsoon recedes, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
• The deficit has disproportionately affected regions like Marathwada in Maharashtra, where districts such as Dharashiv have seen rainfall levels drop to nearly 50% below the long-period average.

Impact & Risks

The rainfall deficit has left half of India facing significant agricultural challenges. Farmers in regions like Marathwada are particularly affected, with major crops such as soya bean suffering due to insufficient rain during critical growth stages. The IMD data shows that 342 out of 734 districts experienced deficient or large deficient rainfall. This has led to widespread crop failures, financial losses, and a drop in groundwater levels, exacerbating the vulnerability of rural communities.
