• The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued a directive to all States and Union Territories in India to enhance their preparedness for the anticipated above-normal heatwave conditions from April to June
• According to forecasts by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), regions in East, Central, and North-West India, as well as the South-East Peninsula, are likely to experience an increased number of heatwave days. The Ministry has emphasised the need for proactive measures, including the activation of heatstroke management units at healthcare facilities, ensuring ambulance readiness, disseminating early warnings, and maintaining real-time reporting of heatstroke cases on the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP).

Impact & Risks

The expected heatwave conditions could pose significant health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat may lead to heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke, which can be life-threatening if not addressed promptly. The Ministry has highlighted the importance of coordinated action to mitigate these risks and prevent potential fatalities during the upcoming summer months.
