US · Published Aug 13, 2026
A powerful heat dome is forecast to intensify over the southern and southeastern United States this weekend, bringing extreme heat and potentially record-breaking temperatures.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), temperatures are expected to soar into the upper 90s and triple digits (35-40°C), with heat indices reaching 105-115°F (40-46°C) due to high humidity.

Impact & Risks

The extreme heat poses significant risks to public health, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Limited overnight cooling will exacerbate the situation, as record high minimum temperatures are also expected. Outdoor workers, athletes, and individuals without access to air conditioning are at heightened risk. The combination of intense heat and tropical humidity will make outdoor activities dangerous, and residents are urged to take precautions to stay safe.
