• The Char Dham temples in Uttarakhand, including Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, will close for the winter season in November 2026 due to heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, and landslide risks. The Gangotri temple will close on 10 November at 12:05 PM, followed by Yamunotri and Kedarnath on 11 November at 10:28 AM and 8:30 AM, respectively. Badrinath will be the last to close on 16 November at 9:37 PM. These dates were officially announced by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee on Vijayadashami, 20 October
• Worship will continue at the winter seats of the deities in lower-altitude locations.

Impact & Risks

The closure of the Char Dham temples will affect pilgrims planning to visit these sacred sites during the winter months. The high-altitude locations of the temples, ranging from 3,000 to 3,600 metres above sea level, become unsafe due to heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, and potential landslides. Travellers are advised to plan their visits before the announced closing dates to avoid disruptions. Those who miss the main season can visit the winter seats of the deities, which are less crowded and offer a peaceful atmosphere.
