• A Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) early warning system has been successfully installed at the Geepang Gath Glacier in Lahaul-Spiti, Himachal Pradesh.
• This initiative aims to strengthen disaster preparedness in the Himalayan region, particularly in response to the growing risks posed by the Ghepan glacial lake.

Impact & Risks

The expansion of the Ghepan glacial lake, from 36.49 hectares in 1989 to over 101 hectares by 2022, has heightened the risk of flooding for downstream settlements. Sissu, located just 11 km downstream, faces the highest risk, followed by Goshal, Tandi, and other areas along the Chandra river corridor. A sudden breach could result in devastating flood waves, impacting communities and infrastructure, including the Manali-Leh highway corridor. The installation of the early warning system is critical for mitigating these risks.
