US · Published Jun 29, 2026
A rare late-June winter storm is impacting the northern Rocky Mountains, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and unseasonably cold temperatures.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm and weather alerts for parts of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, particularly in higher elevations.

Impact & Risks

The storm poses significant risks to travelers and residents in the northern Rockies, especially in higher elevations. Heavy, wet snow combined with strong winds could lead to downed trees, blocked roadways, and power outages. Hypothermia is a concern for those exposed to the cold, particularly in backcountry areas. Travel disruptions are likely, with slushy accumulations possible at lower elevations such as Homestake and MacDonald passes. Flash flooding risks are also present in Glacier National Park due to excessive rainfall. The timing of the storm, just before the Fourth of July holiday, may further complicate travel plans.
