IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall Across Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Other States
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an active monsoon spell across several states in India. A low-pressure system, which formed over the northwest and west-central Bay of Bengal near south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh, has moved to southwest Madhya Pradesh and north Vidarbha as of 8:30 am on 13 September
• This system is expected to move towards southeast Rajasthan and north Gujarat within the next 24 hours. Gujarat, Saurashtra, and Kutch are likely to experience widespread rainfall from 13-15 September, with extremely heavy rain expected in Gujarat on 13 September. Maharashtra, including Konkan, Goa, and Marathwada, is also forecast to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Other states, including West Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, East Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Bihar, Odisha, and northeastern states, are expected to see rain in the coming days.
Impact & Risks
The heavy rainfall poses risks of flooding, waterlogging, and landslides in affected areas, particularly in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Coastal regions, including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, may experience thunderstorms and gusty winds. Fishermen along the north Maharashtra coast and Gujarat coast, as well as the northeast Arabian Sea, have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until 16 September. The cumulative monsoon rainfall in India remains 15% below normal, which could impact agricultural activities.
