Climate Change Alters Habitat Dynamics of Ducks in Eastern Himalayas
Climate Change Alters Habitat Dynamics of Ducks in Eastern Himalayas
IN · Published Oct 7, 2026
• A study conducted by researchers from Gauhati University and Tezpur University has examined the impact of climate change on the habitat suitability and niche dynamics of migratory and resident duck species in the Eastern Himalayan wintering grounds of Assam.
• Using advanced species distribution models, the study analysed current and projected future climatic conditions under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP245 and SSP585) for the mid-future period (2041–2060).

Impact & Risks

The study indicates that climate change is reshaping the distribution and interactions of waterbirds in Assam's Eastern Himalayan wintering grounds. Migratory and resident duck species may face altered habitat suitability, potentially leading to increased competition and ecological stress. These changes could disrupt local ecosystems and biodiversity, posing risks to both wildlife and the communities that depend on these habitats for ecological services.
