• Renewed volcanic activity at Kīlauea volcano in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has led to the temporary closure of Halemaʻumaʻu Trail and part of Byron Ledge Trail.
• The US Geological Survey (USGS) issued a volcanic activity notice earlier this week, reporting spattering at two vents and increased seismic activity beneath the summit.

Impact & Risks

The increased volcanic activity poses risks to both residents and visitors in the area. Hazards include dangerous gas emissions and small, glassy volcanic fragments that can cause skin and eye irritation, especially during windy conditions. Rockfalls and unstable cliff edges present additional dangers, with closures affecting 1.3 miles of trails. The heightened activity may also impact aviation due to the ORANGE color code designation. Visitors are urged to follow safety guidelines and avoid exposure to volcanic fragments and closed areas.
