• The National GLOF Risk Mitigation Programme (NGRMP), initiated by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), is actively addressing the risks posed by Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in high-risk regions of India.
• The programme, currently in its first phase (2023–2026), focuses on states and Union Territories such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Impact & Risks

GLOFs can lead to catastrophic flash floods and debris flows, causing widespread destruction to settlements, farmland, roads, bridges, and hydropower installations. The socio-economic impact is significant, with potential loss of lives, displacement of communities, and damage to critical infrastructure. The Himalayan region, being prone to seismic activity and glacial instability, faces compounded risks, including landslide-dam failures. These events not only threaten local populations but also have broader implications for regional development and disaster resilience.
