Researchers analysed over 6,000 extreme precipitation events between 1979 and 2023, identifying six recurring weather regimes. Four of these are linked to the monsoon: Bay of Bengal low-pressure systems, Arabian Sea low-pressure systems, monsoon-break conditions, and Western Disturbances interacting with the monsoon. Winter and spring Western Disturbances primarily affect the Karakoram, western, and northwestern central Himalayas, while summer monsoon systems dominate the central and eastern Himalayas.
