Melting Himalayan Glaciers Threaten India's Economy and Infrastructure

Himalayan glaciers are melting 65% faster than a decade ago, posing significant risks to India's economy, water resources, and infrastructure, according to a report by Systemiq in collaboration with ICIMOD and other organisations.
The retreating glaciers are causing glacial lakes to expand and become unstable, increasing the likelihood of disasters such as floods.

Impact & Risks

The accelerated melting of glaciers increases the risk of glacial lake outburst floods, which have already caused significant damage in Sikkim (2023) and Uttarakhand (2021). These events have led to loss of lives, destruction of infrastructure, and economic setbacks. The report warns that the ecological system of the Himalayas is nearing a tipping point, with cascading hazards such as unstable permafrost and high-mountain slopes. Additionally, the decline in glacier runoff after 'peak water' mid-century could severely impact water availability for millions of people in South Asia, affecting agriculture, hydropower, and livelihoods.
