Tropical Storm Arthur May Form in Gulf, Heavy Rain Expected in Houston

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a disturbance over northeastern Mexico that has a 50% chance of developing into Tropical Storm Arthur, the first named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.
The system is expected to move into the northwestern Gulf of Mexico by late Tuesday or Wednesday, where it will encounter marginally favorable conditions for development.

Why It's Important?

The heavy rainfall poses a significant flood risk for Southeast Texas, including Houston. Flash flooding could occur quickly, especially in areas with poor drainage or where rain bands repeatedly pass. Flooding may disrupt transportation, damage property, and pose safety risks to residents. While not all areas will experience flooding, those caught under persistent rain bands could see rapidly worsening conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for the region through 7 a.m. Thursday. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and avoid driving through flooded roadways, as even shallow moving water can be dangerous.
