Groundwater stress deepens in Hyderabad's CURE region amid rainfall deficit
IN · Published Oct 7, 2026
• Groundwater levels in Hyderabad's CURE region have dropped significantly due to deficient monsoon rainfall, with 70% of mandals recording below-normal precipitation. The average groundwater depth in September 2026 was 38 feet below ground level, a sharp decline from 15.5 feet in September
• Some areas, such as Kukatpally and Hayathnagar, reported groundwater depths exceeding 65 feet. Monitoring stations recorded alarming levels, with Kukatpally MRO Office showing groundwater at 155 feet below ground level. The region received only 457 mm of rainfall against the normal 619 mm, marking a 26% deficit.

Impact & Risks

The declining groundwater levels pose a severe risk to water availability in Hyderabad and its surrounding areas. Peripheral regions like Kukatpally, Quthbullapur, and Uppal are among the most affected, with groundwater depths exceeding 100 feet in some locations. The insufficient monsoon recharge and poor rainwater harvesting practices have exacerbated the situation, increasing the city's vulnerability to drought-like conditions. This could impact residential water supply and agricultural activities in the region.
