• India has recorded a significant number of fire accidents and fatalities, with 5,971 fire incidents and 5,888 deaths reported in 2024, according to NCRB data compiled by Dataful.
• Residential buildings accounted for 3,585 of these incidents, and electrical short circuits were responsible for 17.2% of the fatalities.

Impact & Risks

The rise in fire incidents during winter poses a significant risk to residents, particularly in urban areas where the use of room heaters is common. Improper use of heaters, such as placing them near flammable materials like curtains, bedding, and clothes, can lead to devastating fires. Additionally, plugging high-wattage heaters into light-duty extension boards or multi-plugs can cause overheating and electrical fires. These risks are heightened in densely populated areas where residential fires can spread quickly, endangering lives and property.
