India Faces Growing Threat from Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs)
IN · Published Oct 3, 2026
• Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) are increasingly becoming a significant natural disaster in high-altitude regions of India and globally.
• These events occur when glacial lakes collapse, triggering landslides, mudslides, flash floods, and debris flows downstream.

Impact & Risks

GLOFs pose severe risks to communities living in high-altitude regions of India, including loss of life, displacement, and destruction of infrastructure. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that a recent GLOF event claimed 55 lives, left 74 people missing, and displaced 7,025 individuals. The cascading effects of GLOFs, such as flash floods and landslides, can devastate downstream areas, threatening livelihoods and critical infrastructure. With global warming accelerating glacial melt, the vulnerability of these regions is expected to increase further.
