Satellite Imagery Highlights Cloud and Surface Features
IN · Published May 20, 2026
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has provided insights into the use of visible satellite imagery for weather observation.
The visible channel, operating at 0.65 µm within the electromagnetic spectrum, captures reflected solar radiation from clouds and the Earth's surface.
This imagery is particularly effective in distinguishing between different types of clouds, land, and sea surfaces.

Why It's Important?

The use of visible satellite imagery enhances the ability to monitor and predict weather patterns, which is critical for disaster preparedness and response. By identifying cloud types and their properties, meteorologists can better assess the potential for severe weather events, such as thunderstorms or heavy rainfall. However, the imagery is limited to daytime use, as it relies on solar radiation for visibility. This limitation may affect continuous monitoring in regions experiencing prolonged cloud cover or during nighttime hours.
