Health Ministry Issues Advisory as AQI Crosses 200 in Indian Cities
IN · Published Oct 24, 2026
• The Union Health Ministry has issued an air pollution advisory as Air Quality Index (AQI) levels in several Indian cities have crossed 200, entering the 'Poor' category.
• According to the advisory, air pollution at this level poses health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing heart or lung conditions.

Impact & Risks

Air pollution levels above an AQI of 200 can cause breathing discomfort for many people, with more severe effects on vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or heart conditions. Prolonged exposure to 'Very Poor' or 'Severe' air quality can lead to respiratory illnesses and exacerbate existing health conditions. Symptoms such as persistent coughing, wheezing, breathlessness, or eye irritation may occur, and medical attention should be sought if symptoms worsen. The advisory also warns against exposure to vehicle emissions, cigarette smoke, and other indoor pollution sources, which can further aggravate health risks.
