India Allocates $8.8 Billion to Boost Maritime Oil and Gas Exploration
IN · Published Aug 14, 2026
The Indian government has announced an $8.8 billion initiative to reduce its reliance on imported crude oil and gas by promoting domestic maritime oil and gas exploration.
Under the 'Samudra Manthan' plan, the National Offshore Exploration Scheme will subsidize 50% of the costs for deep-sea well drilling, capped at $70 million per well.

Impact & Risks

This initiative could significantly reduce India's dependency on imported hydrocarbons, which currently stands at 90% for crude oil and 50% for gas. It also aims to enhance domestic energy security and create opportunities for local suppliers and contractors. However, challenges include overcoming regulatory barriers and attracting foreign investment, given past disputes like the Cairn Energy case.
