NASA's Balloon Network for Stratospheric Aerosol Observations (BalNeO) is set to expand its activities to India and the United States in the coming months.
The project, which involves collaboration between research institutions in the USA, Brazil, France, and India, aims to study the stratospheric aerosol layer, a critical component of the climate system.

Impact & Risks

The expansion of BalNeO to India could enhance the understanding of stratospheric aerosols and their impact on climate, including surface temperature and the hydrological cycle. This research is particularly relevant for India, given its vulnerability to climate change and the role of the Asian monsoon in transporting surface pollution to the stratosphere. However, the project also highlights the risks of geoengineering and the need for robust monitoring systems to detect artificial aerosol injections.
