India experienced a 14% deficit in monsoon rainfall during the first three months of the 2026 season, receiving 603.7 mm against the long-period average of 700.7 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Rainfall distribution varied significantly across regions, with 17 meteorological subdivisions classified as deficient and 18 as normal.

Impact & Risks

The uneven rainfall distribution poses challenges for India's rural economy, particularly in states with significant deficits like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab. Deficient rainfall can adversely affect crop yields, rural demand, and input costs, impacting sectors such as agriculture, FMCG, and rural supply chains. Additionally, regions like the east and north-east, south peninsula, and north-west reported deficits ranging from 11% to 26%, which could exacerbate water scarcity and agricultural stress.
