Study reveals overlapping flood and drought vulnerabilities in India
India · Published Oct 16, 2026
• A study by IIT Roorkee has highlighted the growing convergence of flood and drought vulnerabilities across India, particularly in eastern and northern regions.
• The research analysed 591 districts and found that more than one-fifth of districts are highly vulnerable to floods, while nearly one-fifth face high drought vulnerability.

Impact & Risks

The overlapping vulnerabilities to floods and droughts pose significant risks to affected communities, including disruptions to agriculture, water supply, and infrastructure. States like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, which rank high on the Multi-Hazard Vulnerability Index, face compounded challenges that could exacerbate socio-economic disparities. The study warns that without integrated approaches to disaster preparedness and climate adaptation, these regions may struggle to mitigate the impacts of these hydrological extremes.
