India Likely to Witness Above-Normal Rainfall in Second Half of Monsoon: IMD
India · Published Nov 4, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast above-normal rainfall for the second half of the southwest monsoon season, covering August and September.
• IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra announced that the country is expected to receive 106% of the long-period average rainfall of 422.8 mm during this period.

Impact & Risks

Above-normal rainfall could benefit agricultural activities in most parts of India, supporting crop growth and water reservoir levels. However, regions with below-normal rainfall, such as parts of the northeast, east India, and southwestern peninsular India, may face water shortages. Additionally, areas prone to flooding, like Himachal Pradesh, which has already experienced flash floods earlier in the season, may face heightened risks of waterlogging and landslides.
