India's monsoon deficit impacts sugar production outlook
IN · Published Sep 12, 2026
India's cumulative monsoon rainfall from June to September is 15% below normal as of 9th September, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
This marks the weakest monsoon in 11 years, with rainfall improving from a 42% deficit in June.

Impact & Risks

The monsoon deficit poses risks to sugar production in India, potentially affecting global sugar markets. Dry conditions linked to El Niño could disrupt sugarcane harvests, leading to lower yields. India has already allowed up to 1 MMT of raw sugar imports to address domestic supply strains, signalling challenges in maintaining export levels. This situation could contribute to higher global sugar prices and strain domestic food supplies.
