Approximately 1 million people living within 10 km of glacial lakes in the Himalayas are at risk of GLOFs. These events can cause widespread destruction, including loss of life, damage to infrastructure, and environmental degradation. India has recorded the highest number of fatalities from GLOFs in the region, underscoring the urgent need for preventive measures. The warming climate is accelerating glacier melting, increasing the likelihood of such disasters, particularly during the monsoon months of June to August.
