Bharat-VISTAAR: AI-Powered Platform Launched for Agricultural Advisory Services

• The Government of India has launched Bharat-VISTAAR, a multilingual AI-powered Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) platform aimed at providing farmers with real-time, location-specific advisories on weather, crops, markets, pests, diseases, and soil health.
• Announced in the Union Budget 2026-27 with an allocation of ₹150 crore, the platform integrates data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), AgMarkNet, National Pest Surveillance System (NPSS), ICAR’s Package of Practices, and AgriStack.

Impact & Risks

Bharat-VISTAAR aims to address the fragmentation of agricultural information by consolidating data on weather, markets, and government schemes into a single interface. This initiative is expected to help farmers make informed decisions, potentially improving farm incomes and reducing costs. However, concerns have been raised about the reliability of AI-generated advisories during extreme weather events, the risk of overproduction leading to market price declines, and the accessibility of the platform for farmers with limited digital literacy. Additionally, questions about data governance, transparency, and accountability in case of advisory errors remain unresolved.
