Monsoon Season Brings Vital Rainfall to Asia Amid Below-Normal Forecast
IN · Published Jun 8, 2026
The monsoon season has officially commenced in parts of Asia, delivering critical rainfall essential for agriculture and water resources.
In India, the monsoon began on June 4 in Kerala, three days later than the usual start date.

Why It's Important?

The monsoon season is critical for agriculture in India, particularly for rain-fed crops like rice and cotton. Farmers rely on the timely onset of rains to begin planting and avoid prolonged dry spells. However, the heavy rainfall has also triggered red warnings in Kerala for flash flooding and landslides, posing risks to communities in vulnerable areas. In Thailand, strong monsoon winds over the Andaman Sea are generating waves of 2-3 meters, prompting warnings for small vessels to remain ashore. The below-normal rainfall forecast due to El Niño could exacerbate water scarcity and impact crop yields across the region.
