Kolkata Faces Fresh Rain Risk as Low Pressure Moves
IN · Published Aug 31, 2026
A low-pressure system has developed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining West Bengal–north Odisha coast.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this system is expected to move west-northwestwards, bringing unsettled weather to southern Bengal, including Kolkata.

Impact & Risks

The anticipated heavy rainfall poses a significant risk of waterlogging in Kolkata, especially in areas with inadequate drainage systems. This could disrupt road traffic, public transport, and access to essential services. Vulnerable structures and low-lying neighbourhoods are particularly at risk. The interconnected urban economy of Kolkata and its surrounding districts, including Howrah and South 24 Parganas, may face disruptions in commercial activities and daily life due to the expected rainfall.
