• Governor Kathy Hochul has formally requested a Major Disaster Declaration from President Trump to aid Long Island and New York City communities affected by the severe nor’easter on September 26-27,
• The storm brought gale-force winds exceeding 80 mph, over three feet of coastal flooding during high tides, and heavy rainfall of up to six inches in some areas. The slow-moving system caused significant beach erosion, downed over 1,150 trees, and damaged critical infrastructure, including power lines and public facilities. Nassau and Suffolk Counties were particularly hard-hit, with widespread damage to roads, bridges, and water treatment facilities. The declaration, if approved, would unlock federal recovery funds to assist in rebuilding efforts.

Impact & Risks

The nor’easter caused extensive damage across Long Island and parts of New York City, disrupting lives and infrastructure. Coastal flooding inundated homes and businesses, while strong winds downed trees and power lines, leaving many without electricity. Beach erosion stripped vulnerable shorelines of sand, and flash flooding exacerbated the situation in low-lying areas. The storm's impact on public infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and water systems, poses long-term recovery challenges for affected communities.
