A two-year study conducted in Lucknow district, Uttar Pradesh, has revealed how monsoon cycles significantly alter the physical and chemical properties of agricultural soils.
Researchers sampled soils across six sites during pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon periods, documenting seasonal shifts in soil texture, organic carbon, moisture, and nutrient levels.

The study underscores the importance of understanding seasonal soil changes for the 21% of Lucknow district's population reliant on agriculture. Monsoon-driven shifts in soil properties can affect crop yields, particularly for rice, wheat, and mustard, which dominate local farming. Continuous fertiliser use without soil testing risks nutrient imbalances and declining organic carbon levels. These challenges could impact food security for millions dependent on the Indo-Gangetic Plain's agricultural output.
