Heavy Rainfall Disrupts Life in Kerala; IMD Issues Red Alerts
IN · Published Oct 26, 2026
• Heavy rainfall and strong winds have disrupted normal life across Kerala, with waterlogging reported in low-lying areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for five districts over October 25 and 26, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad are under red alert on October 25, while Idukki and Palakkad will be under red alert on October
• Rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm in 24 hours is expected in isolated areas of these districts. The weather conditions are attributed to a low-pressure area over the southeastern Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep region, along with a trough extending across Kerala towards northern Tamil Nadu. Another low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal may also influence the weather.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall poses risks of flooding, waterlogging, and potential landslides, particularly in districts under red and orange alerts. Educational institutions and tourist destinations, including trekking sites, have been ordered to close in red-alert districts. Residents in low-lying and vulnerable areas are at higher risk of being affected by the extreme weather conditions. The IMD has also issued orange and yellow alerts for other districts, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in these areas.
