• Severe thunderstorms caused record-breaking flash flooding in areas along the Georgia-Tennessee border, particularly affecting the towns of McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee.
• Heavy rainfall, measuring between 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10 inches), led to the Toccoa River reaching a record height of 18 feet (5.5 metres) on Thursday morning.

Impact & Risks

The flash flooding has caused significant damage to infrastructure, including bridges and roads, and has cut off access to some areas. Residents in McCaysville and Copperhill have been urged to seek shelter, with City Halls serving as emergency shelters. The flooding has also led to power outages and the closure of schools and government offices in Fannin and Gilmer counties. Although no injuries or fatalities have been reported, the situation remains dangerous, with floodwaters still posing risks even as they begin to recede.
